What is Spanglish?
Spanglish, in its simplest definition, is a blend of Spanish and English made popular by Hispanic Americans. Especially for Latino children who learn English in school but come home to Spanish-speaking families, Spanglish has become a norm in Hispanic culture. Strictly speaking, Spanglish is not a real language, but its prevalence and influence in Hispanic culture cannot be denied. “Tex Mex” spoken in Texas by Mexican-Americans is a variation of Spanglish.

In some forms, Spanglish is simply including Spanish and English in the same sentence. For example, one might say “Voy a comprar unos tiquets” instead of "Voy a comprar unos boletos" which translates to “I’m going to buy some tickets.”  Other times, Spanglish can mean creating entirely new words based on similar sounds in Spanish or English, such as saying “la carpeta” for “carpet” instead of “alfombra.”

Spanglish as the language of the future?

Purists balk at the use of Spanglish, arguing that it is little more than poor Spanish and English. But the fact of the matter is that the use of Spanglish continues to rise, thanks to a growing generation of Hispanic Americans who are continually shaping and defining the language.
